Cape Fear Review publishes "Iron Mike Behind Bars"

In 2013, I heard an interview with Mike Tyson and his main concern was that no matter how hard we wants to be considered and viewed as a good person, it's impossible. He thanks his wife for understanding him and looking past all that-and also for accepting him as a common man, no longer with a heavyweight income.

I was struck by his interview because it softened the hardened negative opinion I'd had of him. This piece of empathy and truth I gained from the interview is what I drew from when I wrote this story (which appears HERE.)






Thanks to Cape Fear Review, a new market for writers. Here's what they say, Cape Fear Review is a biannual effort, conceived, edited, and produced by Vallie Lynn Watson and Gregory Napp, whose friendship dates from some time in 2005, somewhere in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where they studied and played at the Center for Writers.

Cape Fear Review publishes two issues per year, summer and winter, releasing two stories into the wild each week until that season’s issue is fully at large. We currently operate on a solicitation-only basis.

Gloucester-Third reading in five days as "The Shutting Door Tour" is now almost finished. Some of my set was captured here and it's half new poems and the other half are read from the book.

Eastern Point Lit House is a great place where there are readings, workshops and books for sale. They are also an arm of Eastern Point Press. Check out the link for all their events and offerings.

There I saw the owners and friends Christopher Anderson and Jenn Monroe---I know it's cliche to say "good people" but they are good people. 

Right Hand Pointing's Tenth Anniversary Issue--honored they asked to published "We Won't Work Out"

  Big credits goes to Dale Wisely and John Sharp. Ten years as a quality on-line journal takes a lot of work for zero money. They certainly do it right. For their tenth anniversary they published by invitation only--some folks I'm honored to be published alongside of. They took We Won't Work Out, (out of the three I sent), a short and sweet poem with a couple of meanings. Personally this closes out a month where six of my flash fictions and three of my

Back to this make believe town where there are people struggling in their sandbox (Best Fiends), a gym teacher who takes his date to the strip club (Pole) and a daughter who is made to feel so small, she fits into her mother's apron pouch (The Beauty on the Inside)

Last stop--get out at No. Station on Thursdaze!

"No. Station"-This is a creative non-fiction piece which is told in the point of view of the woman who originally told her story to me.  No. Station is Boston's North Station, but I like the shortened No. because it's like "No". YOU CAN READ IT HERE

The piece will be in Akashic Books (which I found out about through Zoe Hansen) series Thursdaze, Original Flash Fiction Under the Influence where authors take on stories influenced by their favorite vices.  Heroin was the subject I wrote on but as in Twenty-Six Pack and Short Street, I don't glorify nor condemn any usage, nor do I wish it upon anyone.

Akashic says about their series: Thursdaze (because the weekend won’t come fast enough) features original flash fiction modeled after our Drug Chronicles Series. Each story is an original one, and each encapsulates the author’s fictional experience with drugs. Our print series has anthologized authors writing about marijuana, cocaine, speed, and heroin, but contributors to the web series can focus on any drug, real or imagined, controlled or prescribed, illegal or soon-to-be legalized.

Brendyn Schneider, poet and fiction writer Timothy Gager, composer and organist Jeffrey Brody, choreographer and dancer Anna Myers, and multimedia storyteller Catharine Weber discuss creativity – that elusive, untamable beast – on a lively panel on Wednesday, April 30th at 7pm at the Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Road in Sudbury, Massachusetts. This free panel, moderated by author Erica Ferencik, is the first in series of four panels on creativity and the lives of artists.

Where does an artist find inspiration? What if the muse has left the building? How does an artist know when a project is working, or when it’s best to move on? What keeps artists going in the face of inevitable rejection? What is the definition of a successful artist in 2014? It may not be what you think.

                                 

On May 20, I got to appear on the Boston Neighborhood Network show hosted by Willie Pleasants. I share the stage with comic Bob Gautreau. It's a bit of a strange juxtaposition.

 "All About Zebras in the Wild"- Instinctual facts and slang about the word and the animal. Superimposed throughout the story which is the story of a relationship that is sputtering. I was the method I used in Every Day There is So Much About Elephants.

"What Are The Reasons They Hang On" -This is another piece written around the same time as "Zebras". The tone is different, the story similar. It's also one of those flash stories that the opening line jumped into my head and I decided to work with it as a prompt. I liked the off-rhyme the words "awful" and "waffle"
